Is attendance important?

Yes. Attendance is taken every day and attendance figures affect state funding.
Please be aware that state law requires students be in attendance 90% of the school year to be promoted.

What if my child misses a day of school?

We understand that life happens and students will miss school. Students must bring a note after each absence in order to obtain a classroom admittance slip to class. A note from a parent or guardian must be presented to the office within 3 days of the student’s return to school.

What if my child misses more than one day of school due to an illness like the flu?

If the student misses up to 3 days in a row, a parent note about illness is sufficient. If the absence goes over 3 days, a doctor’s note is required.

What is excused and what is unexcused?

Excused Absences: Under Section 25.087, the following absences are excused and cannot be used to deny students benefits that are based on attendance: (1) observing religious holy days; (2) attending a required court appearance; (3) appearing at a governmental office to complete paperwork in connection with the student’s application for U.S. citizenship, or taking part in a naturalization oath ceremony; and (4) a temporary absence resulting from health care professionals if that student commences classes or returns to school the same day of the appointment.

Unexcused Absences: Absences documented as unexcused include but are not limited to:

  • Personal Business – Absences resulting from personal business for student or family members including but not limited to vacations, trips, extra-curricular activities, personal lessons.
  • Undocumented Absences – Absences that are not documented with a parent note.

All unexcused absences will be considered for truancy and for excessive absences in relation to the requirement for 90% attendance for a semester.

Part Day Absences: Part of day absences that are unexcused as designated above will count toward the process described below. Excused part of day absences will not be considered for truancy. Students with any unexcused part of day absence will not be eligible to receive a perfect attendance award at the end of the year.

  • 0 – 3 Part of Day Unexcused Absences in a semester: No action Taken
  • 4th Unexcused Part of Day Absence in a semester: Disciplinary action (one hour detention) will be incurred on the 4th unexcused part of day absence and on every unexcused part of day absence thereafter until the end of each semester.
  • On the 15th Part of Day Unexcused Absence in a School Year: Truancy charges may be filed.
If I check my child out at 10 am are they considered there for that day?

If you check your child out at 10 am it is considered a partial day absence.  If you checked your child out for a doctor’s appointment they must return with a doctor’s note

What is the easiest way to check my students out from school?

The parent or guardian needs to come into the office to sign the student out of school

If I check my child out before the end of school will they get perfect attendance?

The student will only get perfect attendance if the student was checked out for a medical appointment. Any other partial day absence is considered unexcused and would not be rewarded with perfect attendance.

If I check my child out before the end of school will they get perfect attendance?

Perfect attendance will be determined by the principal
