6 FHS Seniors Named Commended Scholars

Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program

Six students at Friendswood High School have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Elizabeth Chong, Julian Falco, Arjun Ganhakhedkar, Jared Janak, Emily King and Alison Tang received a letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) which conducts the program.

The students will be honored by FISD’s Board of Trustees on October 9.

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.

Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered next spring, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 Merit Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“The young men and women named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their performance in the very competitive Merit Program,” A National Merit Corporation spokesperson said. “In a nation that values excellence, it is important to publicly recognize the attainments of scholastically talented young people and the schools that nurture their development. We hope this recognition will help broaden the educational opportunities of Commended Students and serve as encouragement to all students to develop their abilities to the fullest.”
