The undefeated Friendswood Mustangs 7th grade B team took home the District Championship on Tuesday November 5 with a 30-0shutout win against the LaPorte Bull Pups. Led by coaches Corey Dalton, MarkMcKeever and Matt Veariel, the Mustangs finished their season with 6 shut-outwins, only allowing three touchdowns during the entire season.
The championship game got off to a quick start with a 7 yard touchdown pass from Alex Elguezabal to Rankin Mainer early in the first quarter. This was quickly followed by a LaPorte turnover to the Mustangs and then a 37 yard touchdown run by Brady Buffington, made possible by great work on the part of the entire offensive line. A successful kick by Robert Cooney made the score 14-0 early in the second quarter.
Before the end of the first half, a 45 yard pass from Cooney to Mainer set up a 1 yard rushing touchdown by Alex Elguezabal. Robert Cooney’s kick was good and the first half ended with the Mustangs up 22-0.
In the third quarter, a 38 yard pass from Robert Cooney to Lucas Hopkins was completed for a 4th touchdown, followed by Cooney’s successful kick, which made the score 30-0. The defense continued tohold the Bull Pups until the end, allowing only a few first downs during the entire game. Outstanding defensive plays included a hard hit by Cole Walkerafter an onside kick, a fumble recovery by Cannon Willard, multiple solo tackles by Evan Buisson, and a tipped pass by Russell Langston.
In each of their 8 wins of the season, the Mustangs hadnumerous outstanding plays, with 27 touchdowns, 20 extra-point kicks, onesafety by Cannon Willard, and one 29 yard field goal by Robert Cooney, thefirst 7th grader to ever kick a successful field goal in Friendswood Junior High football history. In addition, multiple interceptions, fumblerecoveries, and key tackles by the defense, along with very few penalty yards, made for a nearly perfect season for the undefeated Mustangs.
