Eight athletes and one coach will be inducted into the 2014 Hall of Honor Oct. 10. Located in the Walter Wilson Fieldhouse at Friendswood High School, the Hall of Honor has been recognizing and honoring athletes, coaches and community fans since 2002.
A dream of then Athletic Director Steve Van Meter, the hall is located by the Athletic Director’s office and will be the location as it has been each year for the inductee reception.
The community is invited to the Hall of Honor Reception at 5 pm Oct. 10 in the fieldhouse.
The 2014 honorees include Wiley Murrell from the 1960s. He participated in football and track. Later as a coach at FHS, he worked with football, cross country and track.
Clint Hackney from the 1970s was a kicker on the football team. He also participated in baseball and track.
Stacy Young and Jody Eakman Waggoner were both from the 1980s and participated in both basketball and track.
Matthew Gotsch and Quentin Adams both represent the 1990s. Gotsch played basketball and Adams did football and track.
Sarah Ravenelle Cabungcal and Jeff Ballard represent the 2000s. Cabungcal performed in track and cross country and Ballard did football, basketball and track.
Coach Bobby Black is being honored for his work with football, basketball and especially for baseball. Black was head coach in baseball and 10 times District Coach of the Year with 14 teams who advanced to playoffs. The new baseball field is named for Black.
The reception will relive exciting moments in each athlete and coach’s careers while at FHS and the inductees will later attend football game.
All inductees for the night will be introduced to the stadium audience with the 2014 Distinguished Alumni before the game begins. All inductees will have complimentary tickets to the game.
The Hall of Honor committee was under the direction of FHS teachers Pepper Smith and Mary Rinehart.
