FHS students earn awards at UIL Invitational

Friendswood High School students recently competed at University Interscholastic League (UIL) Invitational meet at Clear Lake High School.

The Friendswood High School Mighty Mustang Programming team had an extraordinary win at the Clear Creek Invitational, according to sponsor Annette Walter. The team took four of the top five places.

They beat the second place team (Clear Lake) by over 600 points! All four young men placed individually,” Sponsor Annette Walter said.

Thomas Chenette placed first, Derek Hudson second, Phuong Huynh with third place and Connor Hubbard in fourth place.


The FHS Spelling team swept the top four places. The FHS winners includeNatalie Wu, Mia Purdom, Cadise Tat, and Faatima Ovais. Sponsor is Cale Borne.

The UIL Accounting team took first place as a team at the Clear Creek Invitational. Mitchell Horn placed first, Anna Osborne second, Melanie Otto third, Audrey O’Neal in sixth place, and Rachel Barlow in eighth place. Sponsor is Kimberly Barksdale.

In UIL Current Events and Issues, the team earned first place. Individual winners included Parker Jofrion in first place, Sean Jankowski in second place, Kayla Vo in third place, Tyler Bandini in fourth place and Paul Birmingham in sixth place. Sponsor is Elizabeth Woodley.

The UIL Computer Applications team competed and Natalie Wu earned a fourth place, Jenna Chenette fifth place and Christine Nguyen ninth place. Sponsor is Christina Motl.

The FHS Literary Criticism team placed first at the invitational. Members who placed include Claire Zehentner with first place and 14 points more than second place, Sarah Mai in third place, Morgan Hecht in fifth place. Mitchell Hsu also competed for the group. Sponsor is Kellye Nye.

The UIL Social Studies team won first place team, according to Sponsor Mary Rinehart. Individual winners were Ben Bruce with first place, Victor Liaw second place, and Bishop Lopez with third place.

The Friendswood UIL Mathematics teams were quite successful at the Clear Creek Invitational on Saturday. The team placed first in Number Sense, with the following individual medalists: Derek Hudson in second place, Victor Liaw in third palce and Faatima Ovais in fifth place. Other team members who contributed to the Number sense success were Phuong Huynh and Brandon De La Fuente.

The team also placed first in General Mathematics, with individual medalists: Derek Hudson in third place and Faatima Ovais in fifth place. Other team members making valuable contributions were Ellie Hipskind, Robert Lincecum. and Brandon De La Fuente.
