Each year House Members are invited to select a constituent to create a visual representation of what makes their Texas House District special.
On November 3, nine fifth grade students in the Art Guild Club at Bales Intermediate in Friendswood ISD were asked to decorate this year’s ornament which will hang on a majestic 20-foot, Texas-grown Christmas tree.
The fifth-grade artists, Aubrey Smith, Madyson McAshlan, Brendan Baker, Grace Greenlaw, Chloe Clement, Alexandra Garcia, Maya Mahaney, Addison Williams and Jennifer Sanchez with Art teacher Nancy Schilhab, Superintendent Trish Hanks, Deputy Superintendent Thad Roher, Principal JT Patton along with Counselor Barbara Gruener presented the ornament to Representative Greg Bonnen’s wife, Kim Bonnen.
The ornament highlights the long-standing character education program with the District’s six Character Pillar banners; Caring, Citizenship, Fairness, Responsibility, Respect and Trustworthiness along with a wire “character tree” which was carefully placed inside the glass ornament.
Background about the District Ornament Project: the district ornament project was initiated in 2009 to give all of the unique Texas communities a place on the Lone Star Celebration Christmas Tree in the Chamber of the Texas House of Representatives. The ornaments will be placed on the tree on December 3, 2016, and will remain on display through January 2, 2017. The story of each ornament is documented in an album in the House Chamber so that visitors to the Capitol may learn the story behind each ornament.
