In July, four students from Friendswood ISD participated in the Texas Choral Directors
Association Elementary Honor Choir in San Antonio, Texas. Kate Humlicek and Emma Ryan are students of Glynis David, Anna McHenry is the student of Carrie Hall and Alice Nguyen is the student of Laura Rachita.
The students auditioned in March through a blind screening with over 700 students in grades 4-6 from across the state of Texas. The students participated in 2.5 days of intensive rehearsals with the internationally renowned director, Dr. Doreen Rao. The experience concluded with a concert for an audience of about 2000.
Friendswood ISD Music faculty was well represented in the organization of this Honor Choir. Friendswood Junior High Choir Director Laura Rachita just completed her term on the TCDA Board of Directors as the Elementary Division V.P. and Honor Choir Organizer. Carrie Hall (Friendswood Junior High Choir Director) and Glynis David (Cline Elementary Music Teacher) served as Honor Choir Assistants. In addition, Matthew Gammons (Westwood Music Teacher) and Jason Abbott (Friendswood Junior High Band) accompanied the Honor Choir in the concert on percussion.
Two other Friendswood Junior High students. Brooke Humlicek and Margaret Otto had the unique opportunity to be involved in a demonstration choir during one of the state clinician’s workshops. Teachers attending the workshop got to see the students in action during a choir rehearsal setting.
“We are so happy for our students to have this life changing experience. These Choir students put the qualities of dedication, commitment, a strong work ethic and teamwork into action,” Laura Rachita
