Friendswood Tennis varsity team competed in a Galveston Tournament over the weekend (Sept. 13,14), and put up a huge win for their program.
On Friday, the team took on Clear Brook (B squad) and led 7 matches to 0 after the doubles portion. They finished the win with a 12-7 margin of victory for the morning match. In the afternoon’s second round, FHS took on Clear Springs and led 5-2 after doubles, and finished the match with a 14-5 final score.
Saturday was a tougher set of challenges, according to Coach David Cook.
“We began our day against 8th ranked (Wilson/TTCA 4A rankings) Stratford. Friendswood managed a 4-3 lead after doubles, but soon fell behind in singles matches,” he said.
After trailing 9-8 (10 being the clinching victory), Kathryn Dowless tied up the overall score by winning in number 6 singles 6-0, 6-2. That left Ryan Desbrow as the lone representative for Friendswood, but he had already lost his first set 6-0.
After trailing to begin the second set, Ryan began to gather momentum. Ultimately, Ryan led in the second set at 4-3, then 5-4, before closing out the set at 7-5. This forced the 3rd set super tiebreaker (first to 10 points and leading by 2 wins match) to decide the overall team match. Ryan raced out to a 5-0 lead before closing out the tiebreaker 10-6.
In the Saturday final round, Katy Taylor, ranked 17 in 5A, were the better Mustangs, winning by a final score of 14-5.
Despite the lopsided final score, the Friendswood Mustangs extended 5 of the lost matches to 3rd set super tiebreakers before losing. LB Labra won in singles and doubles against Taylor, and Johnny Luu, Jordan Desbrow, and Kathryn Dowless also posted singles victories. Michele Ngo lost in a super tiebreaker in singles, but teamed up with LB Labra to score a doubles win for Friendswood.
