Success at the first FFA sponsored Chili/Gumbo/Dessert cookoff means the fun event will become an annual one each Spring at FHS, according to sponsor Laura Vail.
The three-category cookoff brought out adult and youth competitors recently when held onsite at FHS in the parking lot. Barbecue was also sold that day provided by the Lighthouse Cooking Team.
Celebrity judges included FFA teachers Laura Vail and Trevor Reifel, FHS Principal Mark Griffon and local attorney Bret Griffin.
Trophies were given to the winners.
In the Adult Division, Grand Champion Chili was made by Eric Wilkerson. Reserve Champion Gumbo was prepared by Tracey Bordelon who also took Third Place Overall in Desserts.
In the Youth Division, Grand Champion Chili was made by the FHS Best Friends Club, Reserve Champion Dessert was prepared by the FHS Culinary Arts program, and Third Place Overall for Gumbo was awarded to FHS Student Council.
A variety of vendors were on hand with their wares and kids games and face painting were offered. A silent auction and craft fair were also available for those attending.
Lansdowne-Moody Company donated a hayride.
“We loved it! It was so much fun! We had dogs and people and kids. It was a great day,” Vail said. “We look forward to doing it again.”
