Friendswood Boys Place 2nd in State Swimming and Diving Championships

The Friendswood High School Boys Swimming and Diving Team took second place at the UIL State 4-A Swimming and Diving Championships held at The University of Texas last weekend, marking the team’s best showing at a State Meet. In an exciting meet finish, the Friendswood team edged two points past Humble Kingwood Park High School to claim second with 133 points.  Frisco Wakeland High School Boys won the Championship with a total of 173 points.

The Friendswood Girls Swimming and Diving Team placed tenth overall with a total of 89.50 points.  Top finalists were San Antonio Alamo Heights High School with 202 points, Frisco High School with 176 points, and Houston Stratford High with 157 points.

Fifteen Friendswood swimmers and two Friendswood divers participated in the competition which included over 50 teams from across the state.

Friendswood Boys Team medalists included: Jack Maloy, second, 100 Yard Backstroke, with a time of 51.77 ; 400 Yard Medley Relay, second, with a new Mustang team record of 3:10.24  that cinched the second place state finish for the team.  Swimming on the relay were Jack Maloy, Justin Bertelsman, Daniel Theall and Matt Wall.   Wall also set a new Mustang record in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 46.61.

The Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay won Friendswood’s first medals of the competition placing third with a time of 1:49.80.  Swimming on the relay were Cassie Nagle, Sydney Gurry, Gina Fossati and Sadie Wilson.

Preliminary competition on Friday was followed by Saturday’s scoring events that included a consolation heat and final heat in each swimming event.  All 16 places scored points and each Friendswood swimmer and diver played a crucial part in the team’s final standings.

The Friendwood’s Girls state team consisted of swimmers Erin Darnauer, Cassie Nagle, Heidi Henricks, Kylie Hansen, Gina Fossati, Sydney Gurry, Sadie Wilson and diver Rachel Wright.  The Boys state team consisted of swimmers Jack Maloy, Justin Bertelsman, Matt Wall, Michael Fowler, Kyle Beaman, James Tomerlin, Daniel Theall, Jonathan Nguyen and diver Michael Claunch.
