The show is a Walt Disney Theatrical musical based on the similarly titled series of children’s books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film.
Last March, shortly after the loss of Dr. Myrlene Kennedy, Director Kathy Powdrell was contacted by an FHS alumnus, David Schrader. Schrader is the Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Disney Theatrical Group. Based in New York, Schrader contacted Powdrell asking if perhaps FHS would be interested in producing a Disney Theatrical property in Dr. Kennedy’s honor.
Powdrell took the idea to Principal Mark Griffon and six months later FHS was ready to announce that they had secured the rights to Disney’s Mary Poppins through Music Theatre International with Disney’s blessing.
“There is a similarity between Dr. Kennedy and Mary Poppins, the quintessential English nanny. Mary Poppins arrives at No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane to help bring order to the Banks family household,” Powdrell said. “In many ways Dr. K did just that for us here at FHS musical. Dr. K certainly had the magic!”
FHS and FISD will continue to honor Dr. Kennedy by re-dedicating the naming of the auditorium at each performance.
Friendswood High School Musical is teaming up with ZFX to bring flying effects to Mary Poppins. ZFX, Inc, who provides performer flying services that cover the full spectrum from Broadway to neighborhood high schools, will be bringing flying effects and lots of experience along when they partner up with the cast and crew at Friendswood High School.
“As Mary Poppins takes flight, we are grateful to alumnus David Schrader and we know that Dr. Kennedy would think that ‘It is Perfect in Every WAY!’”
Performances will be January 30, 31, February 6 and 7 at 7 pm and February 8 at 2:30 pm Tickets $10 at the door. Tickets on sale in FHS front office daily 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Doors open at 6:20 pm.
The cast is lead by Senior Audrey McKee as Mary Poppins. Poppins arrives at No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane to help bring order to the Banks family household. She is loving and kind towards the children, but can be firm when needed.
She is “practically perfect in every way.”
Seniors Jonathan Yawn and Jana Landers play George and Winifred Banks with Anne Balderrama and Travis Schlicht playing Jane and Michael Banks. Bert, the chimney sweep, that tours Mary Poppins and the children around London and jumps into the worlds of his chalk drawings, is played by Junior Connor Krusleski.
The Creative Team behind Mary Poppins includes Director Kathy Powdrell, Music Director Janwin Overstreet Goode, Choreography Ashley Marmaro and Pit Band Julio Sanchez.
