Students in Audio/Video Technology and Broadcast Communications competed in the SkillsUSA district competition and qualified for the state contest in Corpus Christi March26-28. First and second place winners will compete in their events at state, 3rd and 4th place winners can compete in technical testing. Individual contests were also part of the SkillsUSA competition and helped qualify additional students.
In district competition, four students placed in the Digital Cinema Production (short film) category. Cole Radigan and Westin Williams placed first with Jennie Ellsworth and Claire Gilbreath in third place.
In TV/Video Production (:60 second commercial) FHS students won the top four awards. Kelvin Kataria and Thomas Reynolds received first place, Dylan McKim and Timmy Gray second, Michael Claunch and Josh Hlavenka third place and Jared Bolton and Colton Brown fourth place.
In Broadcast News Production (short newscast), FHS students again took the top four awards. First place was awarded to Audrey Gilbreath, Jessica Steed, Kimberly Fridye, and Beth Bartlett. The second place winners were Lauren Ricker, Amber Rouen, Harris Anderson, and Madi Hever. Sarah Mills, Arshi Butt, Halley South, and Katie Newton won third place. Fourth place winners were McKenna Gazzier, Kate Dannemiller, Hannah Lott, and Simona Taddei.
FHS students in SkillsUSA competed in individual events at the SkillsUSA Leadership Contests recently at San Jacinto College in Pasadena.
The students who placed first or second in their events will compete at the State Contest. Students who placed 3rd or 4th qualify to challenge technical tests for a medal at state.
In Action Skills, Danny Vazquez placed first.
In Job Interview category, Kate Dannemiller placed first.
In Extemporaneous Speaking, Kayla Wooten placed second, Chelsea Hayes third, and Alyssa Brodeur fourth place.
Two FHS students were also elected to serve as district officers in the organization next year. The two are Timmy Gray and Dylan McKim.

With four rounds total, Friendswood High School students in Broadcast Media courses advanced to the second and third rounds recently.
