5 students from Friendswood High School were recently selected to participate in the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Regional Space Settlement Design Competition (SSDC) for 2016. Seniors, Katherine Jones, Christopher Alexander and Aidan Tones, junior Chase Falterman and sophomore Paul Birmingham were selected based on their essay: “What special characteristics, skills, or leadership qualities do you posses that will contribute to a group of 45 students meeting the challenge of designing a space ship?”
This is an exciting industry simulation game for high school students (grades 10, 11, and 12) who are U.S. citizens. The competition scenario for 2016 is set in the year 2076 – 60 years in the future. The theme of the 2016 competition is consistent with our national vision for space exploration.
This is the 18th year that JSC has hosted this competition as part of its education outreach activities. The competition is sponsored and partially underwritten by a group of local organizations, including local Houston-area aerospace companies, the State of Iowa’s Northwest Area Education Agency, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics – Houston Section, and the JSC Chapter of the NASA Alumni League. JSC provides some competition venues and major support. Space Center Houston – the official visitor center of JSC – provides the overnight sleeping and working accommodations on Friday and Saturday nights.
Up to 190 students of all types of skills and interests will participate, divided into four competing student companies. The student companies will select their own company names, and they will self-organize, selecting their own company President, Vice Presidents, Department Managers, etc., and allocating their team members among the various discipline Departments. The Competition will recruit certified teachers to act as chaperons at a ratio of one chaperon per each five students.
The competition is held on March 4, 2016 at at the Gilruth Center, Nasa Space Center and other competition venues during the weekend activities.
