At the Aggieland Classic on February 6, the Friendswood High School Lady Mustangs Lacrosse team handily won their division and placed 2nd overall after a last-minute goal by Stratford High School in the Championship game knocked them out of 1st place. The two-day tournament featured 66 of some of the top girls’ lacrosse teams across Texas and produced a weekend of exciting games.
In the shadow of Texas A & M University’s Kyle Field, the Friendswood team beat Keller HS 8-1, Austin’s Westwood HS 11-2, and Austin’s Stony Point HS 5-2 before losing 3-4 to Houston powerhouse Stratford.
Friendswood led Stratford the entire game until the last few minutes when Stratford scored. The Lady Mustangs were the only team in the tournament to score against Stratford.
“I’m really proud of the girls. They have worked hard and the teamwork on the field was excellent this weekend. Friendswood High School has been very welcoming of the Girls Lacrosse program and we are so appreciative of their support. Placing a trophy at FHS is a great way to begin out fourth season” said Chris Turner, the Girls’ Lacrosse Head Coach.
Over the two-day tournament, goalie Nadelyn Smith denied 16 of 26 attempted goals, Junior Skylar Pope led the team in assists and Captain Emma Johnson led the team with 10 goals.
The JV Lady Mustangs will have their first regular season game Feb. 23 at St. Pius and the Varsity team will have their regular season opener at Houston Christian Feb. 25.
