from The Great American Songbook Foundation
The Great American Songbook Foundation, founded by vocalist, historian, and author Michael Feinstein, has selected forty students from across the country to participate in the 2017 Songbook Academy. This program is the only high school intensive in the U.S. dedicated solely to the Golden Age of popular American music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-twentieth century (1920s – 1960s). High school vocalists representing nineteen states will compete for top awards on Saturday, July 22, at the Songbook Academy final concert at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana.
Now in its eighth year, the Songbook Academy provides high school singers in grades 9-12 with the life-changing opportunity to work with music industry professionals and educators from top college arts programs to experience firsthand the uniquely American and culturally significant music known as the Great American Songbook. Michael Feinstein, artistic director for the Center for the Performing Arts, will be here each day as a mentor. Additional mentors have included Tony-nominee Jarrod Spector (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), nine-time Grammy-winner Janis Siegel (The Manhattan Transfer), and Laura Osnes (Tony nominee for Cinderella on Broadway).
All Songbook Academy participants will be eligible for multiple recognition/awards including the Songbook Youth Ambassador Award. The Youth Ambassador will receive the chance of a lifetime: the opportunity to perform with two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy Award nominated entertainer and founder of the Songbook Foundation, Michael Feinstein. The Youth Ambassador will serve for one year and will have opportunities to perform throughout the year. Past Youth Ambassador performance opportunities have included:
Multiple appearances with Michael Feinstein – including Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall Kennedy Center Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Gala – with Barry Manilow, Liza Minnelli, Johnny Mathis, for example National Anthem at a NFL game, PBS Appearances and the Pasadena Pops.
We invite you and members of the school community to attend the final concert performance. For tickets please visit: www.thecenterpresents.org or call the Box Office at 317-843-3800.
