Five students from FHS competed from Monday to Friday last week in Birmingham, Alabama. Contestants had to get up at 5:30 am each morning and compete until around 7 pm.

In spite of the fact that semi finals had to be stopped because of a tornado, Rachel Sims placed 5th in the nation in Extemp Commentary. J.C. Mills tied for 10th place in Extemp Commentary. The event started with 211 entries.

The tornado happened during semis on Thursday. The students were evacuated to the gym, but Coach Cheryl Ryne decided to take the students to an interior locker room. The students were so mature and calm during the whole thing.

Other results included Carter Adams finished tied for 29th out of 120 LD debaters.

Kennedy Bateman finished 195 out of 1118 Extemp debaters and Kelsey Ehrig finished 109 out of 1118 Extemp debaters.

A documentary film maker for the NSDA noticed us on Monday and decided to follow the team around.

“While the rest have graduated, JC Mills will be returning next year to lead our team as captain. This group has really been special.” said Cheryl Ryne
