OCTOBER 30 – Changed to instructional day

WebmasterHigh School News

Deciding on weather-related school closures or calendar changes is a difficult decision because of the many factors to be considered. Decisions by administration focus on what is best for the students while recognizing there may be inconveniences or scheduling conflicts for some families. We want to ensure you these decisions are not taken lightly.

As you are aware, FISD missed a total of 7 instructional days due to Harvey. Recently, September 18 was altered from a staff development day to an instructional day. On September 23, the Board of Trustees approved the District’s recommendation to likewise move October 30 from a staff development or PLC day to an instructional day for the following reasons:

The Leadership team felt another instructional day was needed to reduce time already lost from the 7 storm days as well as the first few return days that were focused on getting back into the routine of school and care for the many affected students.

Address the unbalanced number of calendar days in the Fall compared to the Spring semester for semester-long classes.

The January/February make-up dates stated on our district calendar were considered but decided against due to potential inclement weather that may occur in the winter months and the timing of Harvey in relation to the beginning of the school year.

October 9th is already set and will remain as a staff development day.

We appreciate the community support we have received and apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause. There are no plans for additional changes to the school calendar at this time. The adjusted 2017-2018 school calendar is available on the district’s website at myfisd.com.
