FHS Junior, Kate Campbell collects almost 4,000 books for the FISD students affected by Hurricane Harvey. Campbell will be honored Monday night by the FISD Board of Trustees for Celebration of Excellence.
Campbell hopes to bundle and deliver the books to campuses before Christmas.
When Kate Campbell’s hometown of Friendswood flooded at the end of August she didn’t know what she would do but she knew she needed to do something!
Campbell decided to help the 400 plus FISD students affected by Harvey by starting her own book drive called Books and Blessings. She began to collect new and gently used books from schools and the community.
“I remembered my own love for reading and how I could read a book and feel at ease,” said Campbell. “So many people have books that they don’t use or read anymore and I knew that after the storm, there would be many people ready and able to help in any way they could.”
What Campbell didn’t know was how many people in her community cared. Campbell received so many donations she now has 3,862 books to hand out.
Campbell decided to design and attach a special bookmark made for each student that reads BLESSINGS. With the help of her mother, all the book bundles will be delivered to the campuses in the next couple of weeks.
Campbell hopes when each student receives their books, “they will know how much Friendswood truly cares about them.”
Campbell will be honored Monday night December 11th at FISD’s Board meeting with Celebration of Excellence.
