Friendswood High School’s Band Director Gregory Dick was chosen as one of the recipients of the 2017 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award on Wednesday, December 13th.
A panel of superintendents, administrators, and sponsors across the state chose Dick as one of 16 honorees.
The award was created to recognize outstanding sponsors who enable students to develop and refine their extracurricular talents to the highest degree within the education system while helping them to keep their personal worth separate from their success or failure in competition.
Dick, who’s career spans 18 years with Friendswood ISD and was with Dickinson ISD from 1979- 1988 and with CCISD from 1998- 2000. Under his leadership, the FHS Marching Band has advanced to the UIL State Marching Contest eight times in a row, placed in the finals six times in a row and was the State Runner-Up in 2003, 2005 and 2009. The Marching Band has won 18 consecutive UIL Sweepstakes awards.
The FH Wind Ensemble was named a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors Project by the Foundation for Music Education in 2015. Texas Band Masters Association named Dick a recipient of the 2015 Meritorious Achievement Award for his outstanding commitment to music education.
As an award winner, each recipient receives $1,000 and symbolic memento from the UIL in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the pursuit of education excellence through interscholastic competition.
Dick will be honored by FISD’s Board of Trustees for Celebration of Excellence at the February 12th board meeting.
