FHS Academic Decathlon brings home State awards

FHS Academic Decathlon team at State

The Friendswood Academic Decathlon team traveled to the State Meet in Frisco, Texas, the week of March 4-8. They placed third in the state for the team overall behind Highland Park and Lubbock Magnet School.

They won 19 individual medals, placed third in the Super Quiz and won $6,500 in scholarships. Damien Freshour placed fourth in the overall individuals for the Varsity division, and Aidan Hernandez placed fourth in the overall individuals for the Scholastic Division.

“To say I am proud of them is an understatement,” Renae Simons, AD coach, said. “They are an amazing group of young people. They were easy to coach and a joy to be around. We thought this was a rebuilding year, but the kids came out of the blue to make us all proud.”

Individual honors were awarded as follows:

Economics – Aidan Hernandez (2nd) and Thomas Mataro (2nd)
Science – Nick Ess (2nd) and Damien Freshour (3rd)
Social Science – Megna Panchbhavi (2nd) and Nick Ess (3rd)
Language and Literature – Nick Ess (2nd), Damien Freshour (2nd), Aidan Hernandez (2nd) and
Megna Panchbhavi (3rd)
Art – Nick Ess (2nd), Damien Freshour (2nd), Aidan Hernandez (3rd) and Megna Panchbhavi (1st)
Music – Nick Ess (2nd), Megna Panchbhavi (2nd) and Miguel Kennedy (1st)
Essay – Aidan Hernandez (1st)
Speech – Thomas Mataro (3rd)

Alice Nguyen and Ben Lewis went as alternates. The team was coached by Fred Lewis, Renae Simons and Elizabeth Woodley.
