FHS Theatre Wins Big in Virtual Tommy Tunes Awards

The Theatre Under the Stars held its annual Tommy Tunes Awards on Tuesday, April 28. In a field of 50 schools, Friendswood High School Theatre received 13 nominations, including best musical, for its performance of Matilda, the Musical. The awards were held virtually and the students all tuned in to see which schools would win.

“It was a thrilling virtual awards show with presenters from Broadway actors, writers, and designers  – all professionals in the industry,” Kathy Powdrell, FHS theatre director, said.

What was most thrilling was when senior Eric Jensen won Best Actor for his role as Miss Agatha Trunchbull, and seniors Taylor Greny and Ashley Adams were selected as recipients of Tommy Tunes scholarships.

“We are so proud of our students on and off stage,” Powdrell said. “Matilda, the Musical was a special production made even more special after the onset of the COVID-19 virus. On behalf of FHS Musical, directors Julio Sanchez, Amy Thornton, Melissa Smith Kyndal Kennedy, our Company of Actors, Pit Band Orchestra, Technical Theatre Students, and myself,  we would like to thank Theatre Under the Stars –  2020 Tommy Tune Awards for this outstanding opportunity to participate.”
