Representatives from the University Interscholastic League (UIL) along with the Texas Dodge Corporation will present Friendswood High School and FISD the Lone Star Cup at the start of half-time at this Friday’s game at Henry Winston Stadium. The Mustangs will play George Ranch in a non-district game.
To celebrate the third win for FHS, all UIL Academic and Athletic coaches will have dinner together prior to the presentation. Then the group will join together on the track to receive the large trophy.
Friendswood ISD has won its third Lone Star Cup for 4A for the best overall academic and athletic programs in the State for 2013-2014.
“The UIL Lone Star Cup honors the best overall academic and athletic programs in the state of Texas,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said. “It takes contributions from every student, teacher and coach in all facets of UIL competition to win this outstanding award. The winning schools and communities should be proud of this incredible achievement.”
The Texas Lone Star Cup is given by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and is based on a school district’s combined academic and athletic achievements. All UIL member high schools in good academic and athletic eligibility standing are included for contention. The cup is sponsored by Texas Dodge Dealers.
Standings include State and Area Marching Band, Team Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Track & Field, UIL Academic State Meet, One Act Play, Softball, and Baseball. Any athletic, academic or other competition not specifically listed above will not be included in the Lone Star Cup standings.
“This year will be remembered as one of the most successful in school history. Athletic Director Robert Koopmann reported that every FHS varsity team made it to the 4A playoffs, and all but one team went past the first round of playoffs,” Superintendent Trish Hanks said. “In UIL Academics, the Computer team and Current Issues & Events had State Champions in their groups. Friendswood High School won the Academic District Meet, was runner up at Regionals and fourth place at State.”
The Lone Star Cup competition began in 1997-98.
Friendswood ISD had its first win in 2008-2009 and then again the next consecutive year, 2009-2010. Both in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, Friendswood held on to third place. In 2012-2013 Friendswood fell into fifth place.
