The Friendswood High School Theatre Department announced that its 2021 musical will be “Newsies.” The production dates are set for Jan. 29-31 and Feb. 5-7.
Set in turn-of-the century New York City, “Newsies” is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!
FHS will feature a live student pit band and 30 technical students who will build sets, do sound engineering, run 25 microphones, design lights and operate the lighting console.
The production team consists of Producer and Director Kathy Powdrell, Conductor Julio Sanchez, Technical Director Amy Thornton, Vocal Director Michael Tyer, Assistant Vocal Director Melissa Smith, Choreographer Kyndal Kennedy.
“I look forward to working on the show with FHS students,” Powdrell said. “The show is high energy and packed with non-stop thrills, it has a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.”
The cast, pit band, and crew will be announced on the FHS musical website on Friday, Nov. 20.
