Young Women Energized

danCounselor Posts

The 10th Annual Young Women Energized (YWE) event will be held the evening of November 14, 2013 from 5:45 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at University of Houston, C. T. Bauer College of Business, Stubblefield Auditorium in Cemo Hall. YWE touches the cornerstone of WEN’s mission and goals, by inspiring young girls to consider careers in energy.

This year we have an exciting program planned including reaching out to more girls than ever through our new Joint Program for Juniors, Seniors, Freshman, Sophomore & Parents Program, the Girls’ Program for Junior and Seniors and Freshman and Sophomore Workshop.

Girls Program

For the student program, girls are divided into small groups where they led by a table host who exposes them to her experiences in the energy industry and explains the steps she took to attain her chosen career.  Girls are also given the opportunity to ask questions and share concerns.   The objective of the program is to demonstrate the vast opportunities that exist in the energy industry for women that can fit a variety of skills and interests and to let them learn from and give them role models of women working in the field and show them that women are making a difference in energy.

For more information on the girls program or to be a table host, please contact the Girls Program Chair, Jennifer Petree.

Freshman and Sophomore Workshop

The Freshman and Sophomore Workshop will be an interactive session.  Participants will explore how to communicate in a way that effectively builds trust and connection with others, whether one-on-one or in work teams.

Parents Program

The Parents Program informs parents and counselors of the career opportunities in energy plus the options available to enable their daughters to continue their education. Attendees will hear from college admissions and financial aid professionals at several universities and representatives of energy companies to find out what they look for in a new hire. To find out more information about the Parents Program, please contact the Parents Program Chair, Kristi Pickett. Scholarship Program

During the YWE event, WEN also awards scholarships each year to five graduating senior girls with an exemplary academic record and demonstrated leadership skills. Winners are chosen based on an essay where they express their views on a current issue or an event in the energy industry.  If you are interested in learning more about the scholarship program, contact the Scholarship Chair, Michelle Dueitt.
