Five $1000 scholarships were presented recently to one cheerleader and four football players by the Friendswood Youth Football Association. President Butch Brazzel presented the checks to the students in the Walter Wilson Fieldhouse at Friendswood High School.
The student athletes were chosen for displaying good teamwork, great discipline, and a positive attitude each day to their coaches and teammates.
Leah Blair, FHS cheerleader, was awarded the scholarship along with football players Kade Beyer, Matthew Moffitt, Nick Flores and Brandon Brower.
Parents were present when the awards were made.
“FYFA wanted to invest in youth and their education. It is not a scholarship to cheer at college, or to play football. If they do that is great but this money is for their education. FYFA is excited to help them,” Brazzel said.
FYFA began 10 years ago when it was noticed that the city of Friendswood needed more sports and cheer opportunities for children. In its first year, approximately 180 signed up, 350 the second year and more than 500 the third year. Currently, the organization continues to attract large numbers of participants.
FISD Athletic Director Robert Koopmann thanked the FYFA representatives for their generosity and said that the five chosen to receive it were outstanding individuals that were all very deserving of being honored.
