Closing Weekend for "42nd Street"

SONY DSCThe second weekend of 42nd Street dances into Friendswood as Friendswood High School Fine Arts Department presents the Tony Award Musical, 42nd Street, a Broadway  “Star – is  – Born” Musical.

Director, Kathy Powdrell shared that the cast, crew and pit band have dedicated each night’s performance to the memory of Dr. Myrlene Kennedy who had produced the FHS Musical for the past 45 years.  Dr. Kennedy lost her battle with cancer on January 12, 2014 and the company places flowers on her favorite theatre seat before each performance each night.

“We are very proud of the students who have done an outstanding job on every area of performance from tapping, to mastering the musical score to the set design, production management and construction.  We work very hard to make our production student driven, providing real world real time experience.  Our technical theatre students worked with a lighting designer to construct, hang and program a lighting marquee for the finale,” Powdrell said.  “Equally we are especially proud of our student technical director, Mitchell Mills who interfaced with the directors, vendors, student actors, student set crew, lighting crew and parent volunteers to make the production process work smoothly.”

SONY DSCThe cast has 86 people, the pit band has 17 and the crew has 39 students.   The student tech students manage all of this with the help of teachers Amy Thornton and Cale Borne.

42nd Street features senior Max Bowen as the Broadway producer, Julian Marsh who is producing “Pretty Lady” at the 42nd Street Theatre.  Senior Jenny Plackemeier plays the aging actress, Dorothy Brock, who breaks her ankle during rehearsal.  Senior Samantha McHenry plays Brock’s replacement, Peggy Sawyer from Allentown, PA.

Also in the cast is Senior, Troy Beckman as Andy Lee the choreographer of “Pretty Lady.”  Julia Conger, Senior plays the chorus girl ëAnytime Anne Reilly.í  Other FHS seniors include Sarah McAdams as Gladys, Noelle Kutz as Dianne Lorimer, Dylan Dickens as Abner Dillon, Austin Melis as Frankie, Kevin Hodge as Pat Denning  and Nathaniel Williams as Mac.

Senior Technical Theatre Students are:  Mitchell Mills, Student Tech Director, Samantha Brown, Sound, Trey Hamby, set head, Michael Otto, Michael Presley, Jalan Foster, Emily McMahon, costumes, Rachel Wright, Sarah Chew, Dara Brayle, Karen Wade and Shae Blehn.

FHS Senior chorus members are:  Julia Robinson, Tatum Garvin, Regan Hughes, Briann Brannon, Sarah Cragin, Cassie Pierce, Dawson Guerrettaz, Uyen Hoang and Maegan Mohr.

At this Saturday’s performance FHS Musical will award some seniors with scholarships based upon this year’s performance for crew, acting, chorus and pit band.  In addition, each cast, crew and pit band member will receive a “show remembrance.”

The FHS Musical plays Friday, February 28 and Saturday March 1 at 7 pm and a Sunday, March 2 at 2:30 pm.   Tickets are $7 at the door.  The only pre-sale tickets are from cast members.  Tickets go on sale an hour before each performance.
