basketball“On Friday the Boys in Blue (technically black uniforms) traveled down to Galena Park for an early tip against the Yellow Jackets.  The Mustangs came out and stung the Jackets early.  With some suffocating half court defense, and timely shooting, the Mustangs were able to take a 10-3 lead heading into the second quarter.  The bigs of Cole Kelly (Jr.), Savion Skeete (Sr.), and Luke Lipetska (Jr.) got the Mustangs going early, using their size advantage to get buckets by the rim.  In the second, the Mustangs outscored the Jackets 13-11 to take a 24-14 lead heading into the halftime break.  Troy Barnes (So.) had one of his best games in a Mustang uniform.  He had 9 points in the game, was very active on defense, and created open shots for his teammates.

In the second half, the Mustangs cranked up the pressure and got the Jackets to turn the ball over multiple times.  Cody Pavlas (Jr.) and Troy played to one of their biggest strengths (man to man defense), by pressuring the Jackets for 94 ft. to cause those turnovers.  The Mustangs were able to capitalize on those turnovers, which led to some easy buckets for the Mustangs.  The second half featured the Mustangs slightly outscoring the Jackets 27-26.   In the end, the Mustangs were able to bring a 50-40 victory back to the Wood before the wind and rain came.  The Mustangs were led in scoring by Gracen McGregor (Sr.) (14) and Savion Skeete (Sr.) (12).

All five teams will be back in action TONIGHT, as we host Ball High.  Freshman A/B- 4:30, Soph/JV-6, Varsity-7:30.  Below is the updated standings for 22-5A.”
