Friendswood High School is proud to announce that four students qualified for the UIL Theatrical Design State Meet. Seniors Gabriela Weakley and Keana Jazdyk qualified in Hair and Makeup Design. Seniors Soliel Gignac and Meg Dodson qualified in Set Design. This marks the second time Gabrieal Weakley and Keana Jazdyk have qualified for the State Meet.
Every year the UIL celebrates the accomplishments of Theatrical technicians/designers by giving them the opportunity to design the sets, costumes, hair and makeup, and marketing for a chosen play. This year the play is the 17th century Spanish classic Life is a Dream by Pedro Calderon de la Barca. Life is a Dream is a tale of superstition, revenge, love and the question of reality vs. dreams. Designers were prompted to design the play as if it were being produced by a troupe of time-traveling actors. Designers were given the added task of finding a way to make the design sustainable in some way using the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle concept.
Students were given the prompt the first day of school and submitted their entries on February 8. Results were announced on March 15. The UIL Theatrical Design State Meet was to be held on April 29 but is on hold because of COVID-19.
Other members of the team are Margaret Otto, and Ashleigh Prince.
Amy Thornton is the Theatre Department Assistant.
